Various kinds of user involvement is a dominating tendency of design processes across the world. Therefore, on 9 May, Kolding School of Design together with the University of Southern Denmark and House of Design hosted a seminar on storytelling as a means to communicate emotions and experiences between users and designers.

Key note speaker Susan Bell

The key note speaker of the day was Susan Bell, American professor in sociology from Bowdoin College in Main. In recent years, Bell has done research in the field of narration within the health sector. Bell presented two case studies. One was about including the personal stories of patients at a medical research seminar and the effect this had on the future study of their illness. The other focused on art installation as a narrtive medium.

Vibeke Riisberg and Lene Wul from Kolding School of Design have done a research project on textiles for the hospitals of tomorrow and presented their work on incorporating narrative elements in the process of creating dialogue.

Other speakers were:

  • Designer and head of House of Design Ulrik Jungersen, about the process of transforming an idea into a design. Jungersen posed this question, among others:How do we transform stories from the users to be stories for the users?
  • Per Krogh Hansen from the University of Southern Denmark, presented narration, the phenomenon. Krogh believes that in recent years, the term Storytelling has been misused, and he attempted to define a number of concepts within narration
  • Rune Nørager, design psychologist, discussed the use of metaphors in design and research
  • Bianca Maria Hermansen, PhD student, architect, and city planner at the Centre for Sports and Architecture at Aarhus School of Architecture spoke under the headline ”The narrative City”
  • Pia Lyngdrup, interior designer, explained how her business includes the user in the design process by using interviews and the user's personal story.

Quite unconventionally, the seminar was visually documented by illustrator Per Dam.

The seminar was funded by the Danish Centre for Design Research.
