Wardrobe research
- What can we learn from people's wardrobes and how can this knowledge benefit the fashion industry and fashion education?
This is the overall question of Else Skjold's PhD project which is funded by Design School Kolding and CBS.
Her dissertation, which navigates in the cross field between business og design, takes its starting point in a unique approach to user studies called the wardrobe method where Else Skjold studies the wardrobe collections of ordinary people.
One of the main conclusions of the PhD is that when people decide what to wear, fashion as we know it actually plays a relatively small part. Age, body type, education and other affiliations not related to fashion are key factors when it comes to our choice of garment.
The consequence of this realisation suggests a relevance for developing alternative ways of understanding, producing, communicating and consuming garments.
The dissertation is completed in collaboration with shoe manufacturer ECCO, Fashion Designer Mads Nørgaard and students and teachers at Design School Kolding.
The PhD defence takes place on Wednesday 29 October from 13.00-15.00 at Copenhagen Business School, Porcelænshaven 16 A, Copenhagen, room PH 110. The defence is open to the public.
