Fashion systems and Micro-Utopias: Sustainability at Parsons
Open lecture by Timo Rissanen, Assistant Professor at Parsons School of Design

Timo Rissanen is an esteemed fashion designer, artist, scholar and educator. He currently holds a position as Assistant Professor in Fashion Design and Sustainability at Parsons School of Design in New York.

The talk presents Rissanen’s current research as well as the broader context of teaching sustainability at Parsons. Rissanen was part of the team that developed Sustainable Systems, a required course taken by over 1,000 students at Parsons each year. He was also part of the team that developed the Systems & Society pathway in the BFA Fashion Design degree. His current research focuses on design for micro-utopias in a fashion systems context.

Rissanen has pioneered the field of Zero‐Waste Fashion Design starting with his PhD study on the intersection of cloth, fashion design and pattern cutting. He has also co-published two books on fashion and sustainability, Shaping Sustainable Fashion with Gwilt in 2011, and Zero Waste Fashion Design with McQuillan in 2016.

Timo Rissanen’s visit at Design School Kolding is part of the project "Uncovering the Potential of Creative Fashion Design" funded by The Danish Agency for Science and Higer Education – -International Network Programme – March 2018-March 2019. The project lead is Associate Professor Vibeke Riisberg, and the purpose is to develop a strong network between staff and students at Design School Kolding and Parsons School of Design.
