Carpets and upholstery textiles from environments such as ships and hotels have significant recycling potential that is not fully utilised today. A Danish partnership – with the participation of Kolding School of Design – aims to change this.
Within the design track of the collaboration, the partners explore how products can be constructed more intelligently, for example by using fewer types of adhesives and more suitable material combinations that can enable later separation and recycling. Here, design researchers from Kolding School of Design contribute expertise in circular design. At the same time, the partners are experimenting with reusing and redesigning textile waste into one-off products. Finally, existing and emerging technologies are being tested to identify effective methods for separating wool and nylon, allowing the two fibres to be recycled individually and reintroduced into the material cycle.
Project partners include Gabriel, SheWorks, Dansk Wilton, Technical University of Denmark, Kolding School of Design and Danish Technological Institute.
