About the project

How can we design a mobile application and a headset for a voice responsive robot on a construction site in a way that enables seamless communications between all involved?

The purpose of the project is to develop aid enabling voice-controlled robots for the construction industry. A carpenter who installs plasterboard spends 25-50% of his total installation time measuring and cutting materials. By developing a voice-controlled mobile cutting robot that collaborates with the craftsman directly on the construction site, workers get a helper who can account for up to 85% of all cutting work. The Design School Kolding helped develop the digital user and voice interfaces.

Purpose

Based on user insights, the mobile application was designed as an aid to visualize the voice controlled communications between a construction worker and the cutting machine as well as to work independently without the voice commands. It is designed as a stand-alone solution with none or minimum instructions needed to enable users to setup the cuts remotely, which helps keep workers’ daily tasks more efficient.

The headset is designed to work together with the mobile applicationa nd provides the necessary functions, to give voice commands to the robot, start and stop cutting process and receive incoming information for co-workers. Its shape and form, as well as recommendations for materials, are dictated by the conditions and workflows of construction workers as we observed.
