Sensory Tools to Overcome Fear of Needles

MA Design for People

HVAD?

WHAT? The sensory tools to overcome a fear of needles are a set of four tools designed to help parents reassure their children before and during blood sampling.

HOW? Through fieldwork at Kolding Hospital, Roseanne Kimber gained insight into how difficult it is for parents to comfort their children when they have to be pricked with needles. The tools are designed in collaboration with parents, children, paediatric nurses, bioanalysts and hospital clowns and rely on the calming effects of music, acupressure, meditation, pain-relieving hypnosis and Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR), which is a pleasant reflex triggered by stimuli such as delicate sounds.

WHY? Being pricked with a needle as part of a medical check-up can be a scary experience for a child. Through fieldwork at Kolding Hospital, Roseanne Kimber gained insight into the need for parents to be able to comfort their children when they need to be pricked with needles.
