New setting, same people

Communication Design student Victor talks about his work as Superuser in the school and how the fantastical inspires him.

Design School Kolding is transforming. For this exciting transformation, the school has temporarily relocated. While our setting has changed, the strong community and shared passion for design within Design School Kolding remains the same.

In the series "New setting, Same people", members of the institution will give an insight into their part in this community. Today we give you Communication Design bachelor's student and Communication Workshops Superuser Victor Thrane Kolling, who is excited for the possibilities in the new school building.

What inspires and/or fascinates you?

Inspiration can come from anything, the environment, people, experiences, popular media. I would say I'm fascinated with the fantastical, something that tells a good and engaging story. I'm also inspired and fascinated by the way we interact with each other. I love boardgames both as a means of telling a story, and as a way to push people to think or engage with the world in a different way.

What is your background?

I've been taught a variety of visual communication methods. Partly through an exchange in England but mainly through my education at The Animation Workshop in Viborg. I was part of Visual HF, their joint study program with a local high school. This gave me a broad introduction to various fields and a good base understanding of thinking visually.

Why did you choose to study at Design School Kolding?

The school has a great reputation, and it was recommended to me by acquaintances. I knew I had a wish to express myself visually. I also had a desire to create something useful and valuable beyond the visual appeal. The school's approach of combining the theoretical with the practical, while having a focus on the target audience, seemed to fit this really well.

What would be your dream assignment?

My dream assignment would be something with room to challenge. I enjoy examining conventions and challenging what is expected or ordinary. My dream assignment would probably involve music in some sense as well. You have a love for album artwork. It would be a joy to collaborate with creatives from a very different field, someone who appreciates the details and expression.

And what are you most excited about while the school is being transformed?

The space! Our temporary location is cosy, but a little cramped. It's been really nice to get closer to each other, it's easier to get a feel for what everyone is working on. It's very exciting. However, I look forward to the new, bigger space, so we can have fewer limits. I'm a superuser in the communication workshops, meaning I assist other students in their work with printmaking and bookbinding. I really look forward to how the transformation will affect the workshops and allow us to make an upgrade.
