Being an Erasmus student
This semester I am blogging to you from Kingston University London and as you might have read in my former post, London did not take to me right away. But this time I will tell you a little bit more about how the school works, because I have finally started my semester.
Things here are a lot different from Kolding.
First and foremost, we do not have the same luxury of investing ourselves 110 % in one project at a time. At Kingston, we are juggelig four projects at the same time - all due to be handed in at the end of the semester in December. This means that at this moment I should be working on: Finding a design company that will collaborate with me on a design project, designing a sweatshirt for a law firm, researching on new fashion sub groups, writing a manifesto and of course preparing for the Christmas Bazaar at Design School Kolding. (Yes, I will be coming home for a weekend to attend. And you should too, November 29.-30.) And to boot, we also get a Burberry project brief this upcoming Tuesday.
Second: We do not, not even as post graduates, have our own workspace... How I miss my workspace back home! We have a small classroom, as you can see on the picture, that fits around 35 students (on stools) and this have to be emptied out every night. So most of my work has been done from my tiny bedroom at 22 Addison Gardens (which is now, 100 % bed-bugs-free!).
And third: There is a lot of talking. Don't get me wrong. I love talking, it's my specialty. But if you don't like discussing your oppinions on camera, in English, Andrew Ibi's classes may not be for you. He's is a fantastic tutor, and so are all of our tutors, but he will drag your oppinion out of you, whether you want it or not.
This all might sound a little daunting, but it really isn't. So far, we haven't gotten too far with our projects - and what I have turned in so far (a magazine supplement to complement my research on Alexander McQueen) has actually been received really well from our tutors. So, I have really come to appreciate school as it is back home, and the way of working I have taken with me from Kolding, but I also look forward to see how these projects will have affected me when I get back to my much beloved work place at Design School Kolding.
