Six students are shortlisted
demonstrating creativities when design meets disability
"Leaving no one behind" is the main message from Bevica Foundation to rethink the historical concept of Universal Design (UD). As one of the oldest charities in the world to advocate the rights of people with different forms of disabilities the Bevica Foundation launched its first Bevica Scholarship Programme in 2022 to engage all university students in Denmark to make differences through their practices on disabilities.
Design School Kolding, a design academy full of talents on industrial, fashion, textile, accessory and communication design, Rector Lene Tanggaard says:
- We found the Bevica Scholarship Programme fit well to our principle of design for three major societal purposes: People, Planet, Play. Since 2021, we got extra funding from Bevica Foundation to form our Universal Design Group led by Professor Eva Brandt and invited Dr Yanki Lee as our guest professor on this specific design methodology.
Dr Lee launched the UD Advance Studio with the goal to support students from Design School Kolding to perform better at Bevica Scholarship Programme.
From special lecture on design for universality and encouragement for all to sign up in January 2023, Dr Lee also accommodated those signed up to the ideation workshop in February 2023 and organised drop by and video rehearsing sessions for them in April to offer support for their 1st submission.
We are happy to share the good news that six students from Design School Kolding are among the 17 shortlisted from 5 Danish Universities including Design School Kolding, Royal Danish Academy, Technical University of Denmark, IT-University Copenhagen, University of Copenhagen.
From inclusive kitchen, design solutions for children with different form of disabilities and future ageing, students from Design School Kolding are demonstrating creativities when design meets disability.
The nominees from Design School Kolding are: Five students from the Design for People-program; Marco Sidoli, Nanna L. Jacobsen, Richard Elversøe, Daksh Chhillar and Marek Kuzminski. And one student from the Design for Play Program; Mariagiulia Sardu.
