A role playing game

A couple of weeks ago I posted a bit of my process on this blog. I thought it would be good to follow up on that, with this post.

One of the great things about studying at Kolding School of Design is, that for the first weeks (depending on the length of a project) of the design project you really don’t have to tie yourself down to a concept.

It is incredibly liberating to play around, with little to no consequence.

However, once that honeymoon face is over, you do have to come up with an actual concept for your project. Luckily this is no less fun than just playing around.

As you might recall, a couple of weeks ago I created some concept art, just for the fun of it. The product was vaguely inspired by the game “The last of us” and depicted a grinning girl who was missing an arm.

Well let me get you up to speed on what I did with that drawing.

Not long after I had drawn the girl, I went out in the field. In this case the field was a Manga drawing class I taught at the local night school for teenagers.

I challenged them to come up with a story for this girl, which they did with some vigor. I then challenged them to create a comic from the story that we had created together.

The whole thing was a lot of fun and gave me some great insight into how to talk to teenagers and what they respond to.

From that came an idea of a role playing game, that might make teenagers want to engage in their English studies in a more active way.

The product (from which you can see a couple of characters belowe) is a table top role playing game, that allows one teenager to create a scenario based on pictures. I call this person the “game master”

The game master then sits down with the players that are all given character cards (as seen above) to play through the story they create together.

This kind of project is the reason I would not trade my design-school education for any other. I was given complete freedom over this project and based most of it on experience I have gained through my 5 years here and I have today, I am kind of proud of this one.
