The textile potential of Seaweed

Material Narratives

This project is an exploration of the seaweed Bladderwrack and it’s potential use in a textile context.

It is investigating how to use a resource from the ocean to design for sustainability. The aim of the project is to support research and innovation in developping more sustainable materials for the textile industry in the future.

The brown algae bladderwrack has been the center of the experiments with bioplastic based on agar agar, water and glycerin.

This composite material has been manipulated in different ways in order to create different textures, surfaces and consistencies.

It is further explored how to create a yarn from the composite material of seaweed and bioplastic that can be knitted or woven in combination with linen.
