New setting, same people

Nanna Jacobsen, Media Workshop employee and alumni of the school, talks about her work at the school and her fascination for typography.

Design School Kolding is transforming. For this exciting transformation, the school has temporarily relocated. While our setting has changed, the strong community and shared passion for design within Design School Kolding remains the same.

In the series “New setting, Same people”, members of the institution will give an insight into their part in this community. Today, we give you Nanna Jacobsen, assistant in the school’s Media Workshop.

What inspires and/or fascinates you?

Humans are a constant fascination to me. Meeting people who live differently, think differently and act differently than me. They show me wonderful worlds that I don’t have the imagination to come up with.

What is your background (what did you do before you got to Design School Kolding)?

I’m a purebred ‘DSKD’. Bachelor’s degree in Communication Design. Master’s degree in Social Design. Both from Design School Kolding.

Can you tell us a bit more about your work at Design School Kolding?

I assist in the creation and implementation of the new school website.

What do you like most about working at Design School Kolding?

Design School Kolding is a design school of international scale. Yet, it’s located in a small Danish province town with less than 65,000 inhabitants. How is that possible? Is it magic?

Can you tell us about a great memory from studying or working at Design School Kolding?

That one time when I unexpectedly (re)discovered characters – a written or printed letter or symbol – and got a glimpse of understanding of how utterly beautiful and grand design typographies, words and languages are. Did you know that the words ‘my love’ in Arab are designed so that one can write them again and again without ever having to lift the pen from the paper? A never-ending love poetically expressed in character design.

And what are you most excited about while the school is being transformed?

I cannot think of anything more important to the creative study environment than students mixing and cross-pollinating ideas, and with the workshops located right at the heart of the new school, I look forward to witnessing creativity bloom.
