The 3D Print Project
I just finished a course called "Concept Development". I first thought it would be about a holistic way of thinking when creating a product. That could mean thinking about use, user, production, disposal and many other things in order to make the product sustainable, durable or giving it a purpose. I was looking very much forward to this because I think it is important and I’m good at it.
But in this course, concept is about developing an idea that can steer all ideas in the project in one direction, and mostly about the esthetics.
At first I was disappointed, but I realized that there is a time and place for everything. And sometimes you must choose what to focus on in a project. After all, I’m not yet a graduate designer. I sometimes need to work on and become better at a single subject, before connecting everything that is important in a design process.
My project is called The 3D Print Project and is about translating 2D visual tactility and composition into 3D shapes in clothing.
It all started with a Henrik Vibskov body stocking which has a beautiful all over print called “Dirt Print” (The Eat). The print contains both flat and visually tactile surfaces. I wanted to translate the flat surfaces into shape and the tactile surfaces into different textiles with structure of different kinds.
I also chose to work with marble as an inspirations source, because it contains great compositions.
We had to design pants because a part of the course was construction of pants, but I also made some sketches of shirts and jackets, to work with the concept in a collection.
So the pants ended up - as you see - with the lines and flat areas of the marble translated into shape and the blurry, tactile areas translated into textile surfaces like fur, leather, spacer fabric and more.
I finished a toile, but I really want to sew the pants in the right materials. Maybe I’ll have time for that when I'm fifty or something.
