New setting, same people

First year Design for Play student Zahra Abdus Samad tells about herself as a designer and her view on the transformation of the school.

Meet Zahra Abdus Samad

Design School Kolding is transforming. For this exciting transformation, the school will temporarily relocate from Ågade 10 to Dyrehavevej 116. The look of the school will change, but the strong community and shared passion for design within Design School Kolding will remain the same.

In the series “New setting, Same people”, members of the institution will give an insight into their part in this community. Today we give you MA student Zahra Abdus Samad.

What inspires and/or fascinates you?
Books and literature have always been a huge source of inspiration for me as a communication designer and storyteller. What did you do before you got to Design School Kolding? I worked as a communication designer and illustrator for 5 years after graduating with a degree in communication design. I also freelanced as an illustrator, with a particular focus on children's literature and graphic novels.

Why did you choose to study at Design School Kolding?
With a particular interest in child culture and design, applying to the Design for Play programme at Design School Kolding felt like the best next step in my practice as a designer. That, and how child culture and play is central to the culture of Denmark compelled me to apply.

What would be your dream assignment?
I've always had a particular inclination for experience design, particularly in community spaces such as museums and libraries. A project that combines play and storytelling in such a space would be a dream project.

What are you most excited about while the school is being transformed?
The interim school is kind of far from my apartment, so I'm kind of excited about finally getting to fulfil my lifelong dream of going to school on a bicycle! I never had the chance to do that before.
