About the project
Master Talent Program - Arts & Crafts aims to motivate, inspire and support skilled craftsmen, artists and designers in the development of a sustainable career through a talent development program.
By focusing on bringing the old craft traditions into a context of a new and increasingly digital world, we can ensure that valuable knowledge and know-how within the various crafts still have the opportunity to benefit the Danish society.
The project problem
- How can I, as a fashion designer, expand my knowledge and skills in traditional handicraft techniques and use these as a means to sustain the concepts of slow fashion and emotional sustainability?
- How can I expand my field and my professionalism as a fashion designer through traditional handicraft clothing?
- How can I visually convey strategies for the relevance, opportunities and place of handicraft clothing in the future design industry?
The goal/objective of the project
Clothing design can and should be understood in a wider and more flexible context than it does nowadays, but if we as designers wish to push to the limits of how design should be perceived, it is important that we investigate new applications for our profession.
Focusing on traditional clothing crafts: knit, crochet, embroidery and bobbin lace, the project's purpose is to provide an example of how we might redefine the concepts of design, production, consumption, use, and recycling strategies according to the concept of slow fashion.
In this project, I wish to use my design skills to explore and develop traditional clothing-related craft methods, and define and communicate design strategies for the craft's future potential within Slow Fashion in the modern clothing industry.
The methods and outcome of the project
The starting point is to investigate four classic clothing: crochet, knit, bobbin lace and embroidery.
Focusing on these traditional clothing crafts, I have sought to give a perspective view of how we might apply traditional crafts into a slow fashion approach to the future of clothing design.
As an extension of the project's learning process, I have sought to take a design-oriented grip on the potential I see in the clothing crafts, and define these through an exhibition concept that visually communicates future design strategies for the potential of the craft within three different branches: Industry, Hobby and Social Development .
Through this, my mission is to raise awareness about the features and future potential of clothing crafts for a wide audience. As well as showing strategies for how I, as a design professional , I can utilize my acquired knowledge in my future work.
