‘Shaping New Material’, new biomaterials

Graduation Project: ‘Shaping New Material’, new biomaterials, Design for Planet – Master, 3rd Year, 2024
Background

In their final Master's project, students address a relevant and complex design challenge by applying the design theory, methods, and skills acquired during their two-year specialisation. Design for Planet is one of Kolding School of Design’s Master's programmes, where researchers and students work with transformation through design, exploring the complex issue of sustainability in production, consumption, and action.

Designers Pei Lunde Christensen and Rakel Muff Villesen have developed a series of biomaterials made from coffee grounds, eelgrass, blue and white mussel shells, and sawdust. In their pursuit of a circular material catalogue, the designers have investigated the technical properties, formal potentials, and aesthetic qualities of these materials.
