A bench that communicates
Is it a piece of art? Is it a utility item? Designer Osmund Olsen's light sculpture right by lake Slotssøen in Kolding is both.
The light sculpture consists of three light benches created for the Kolding Light Festival and Kolding Hotel Apartments.
However, the sculpture is not merely a decorative item. Guests are allowed to sit on it and interact with it.
- Each bench has a light source in the middle that you can control via your smartphone. This means that users can change the colours, regulate the light intensity, and time when the light goes on and off, Osmund Olsen explains.
The three benches are shaped as hexagons to match the identity and characteristics of the hotel building. Kolding Hotel Apartments has decided to keep the sculpture permanently and not just as part of the festival.
Osmund Olsen has worked with lighting design for years. He graduated from Design School Kolding in 2013 with his graduation project Modulex, an LED lamp inspired by the graciousness of a dancing ballerina. The same year he had his debut at the Kolding Light Festival where he created an acrylic Christmas tree.
One year later he exhibited Ciclo; an installation created in a unique collaboration between Grundfos and Design School Kolding. Yet this time his work is here to stay. The benches are located right by lake Slotssøen. Please have a seat.
