Let your hands do the thinking
No corners were cut during the last course with ECCO. On the contrary this year's course included shoe AND bag design - an extra dimension which posed a positive challenge to the students from industrial design and fashion and textile design.
”Draw a shoe. Sketch a bag” is the title of the book that portrays the ideas, processes and results which made up the students' collaboration with ECCO and Shoe Designer D’Wayne Edwards from Pensole Footwear Design Academy in America. A collaboration which focused especially on pen and paper, two of the designer's main tools.
Michael Frederiksen, teacher and the man behind the publication, says:
- A main focus area in this project has been to sharpen the hand sketching skills of the participants. Hand sketching allows you to communicate your design to other people and enables you to evaluate your work with a high level of detail and accuracy. And fast, ideation-oriented means of expression like mock-up models and hand drawings allow you to let your hands do the thinking.
In addition to the book (see link below), Michael Frederiksen has produced a film, which zooms in on the process. You can check it out right here on this page.
