‘Jordnært’ urn made from mycelium
Graduation Project: ‘Jordnært’ urn made from mycelium
Industrial Design – Bachelor, 3rd Year, 2022

Background
In their final bachelor project, students tackle a design-related challenge in collaboration with a partner, applying the theory, methods and skills acquired over their three years of study.
Søren Overgaard has created an urn that is organic in both form and production. Made from mycelium – the root structure of fungi – the urn is grown in a mould filled with hemp fibres. As the mycelium grows, it releases a natural binding agent called chitin, which holds the fibres together. Once dried, the urn becomes fully solid. After burial, it absorbs moisture from the soil and quickly decomposes through natural processes.
Today, Søren Overgaard produces and sells mycelium and hemp urns through his company Jordnært.
