Science Week 21 April: Build, listen and unwind at Kolding School of Design

What do clowns have to do with design? Can you build a chain reaction? What does play look like to you? Science Week Denmark opens the doors to research across the country. At Kolding School of Design, it becomes a day where design research takes centre stage through workshops, talks, guided tours and installations—inviting curious visitors to explore a field working at the intersection of people, materials and society.

As part of the nationwide festival, Kolding School of Design welcomes visitors to a day where new knowledge can be experienced in practice. You can build, listen, ask questions and gain insight into how design research shapes ways of learning, collaborating, developing and creating new solutions. The event is free of charge, and visitors are welcome throughout the day.

In the auditorium, from 10:00 to 16:00, guests can help build a collective chain reaction using a wide range of materials, based on three research projects. Along the way, Jesper Falck Legaard, Line Gad Christiansen and Mathias Poulsen will give talks on related design research, offering insight into the questions and currents shaping the field right now.

In the morning, from 10:00 to 12:00, the programme is particularly aimed at upper secondary and primary school pupils. They can, among other things, take part in a workshop exploring what play is through the lens of design research. Cecilie Ann Alveniz Blicher researches children’s perceptions of play with materials. The workshop provides materials on tables and plenty of space for both curiosity and creativity.

After lunch, from 12:00 to 16:00, the programme opens to everyone. The day continues with talks, tours and further insights into how design research is developed in practice at the school in Kolding. Visitors can, for example, encounter research into children’s experiences of play with materials and hear Sofie Kinch and Thilde Laursen present a project developed in collaboration with Danish Hospital Clowns and Aarhus University Hospital, where design helps create new experiences for children and young people in hospital, as well as their families.
