How do you design a memory prosthetic?

Design School Kolding is honoured to have Madeline Schwartzman, Professor at Parsons, The New School of Design in New York, as part of our visiting faculty. She will conduct a masterclass for our first-year MA Accessory Design students and give an open lecture on Tuesday 7 November at 1pm.

The masterclass involves producing 'memory prosthetics'. This means the students will build prototypes using the head as their object. They will work intuitively with materials and the body and not limit themselves by thoughts and preconceptions. Off-hand, this might sound contradictory. Madeline Schwartzman explains:

”The head is a mysterious artifact. It is extremely rigid, both formally and functionally. At the same time it is also highly unstructured and unwieldy. This project—The Memory Prosthetic—will attempt to reconcile these two contrasting states of our most precious body part. We will also attempt to mediate between being inside of and outside of our head."

Schwartzman is known, among many other achievements, for her book See Yourself Sensing: Redefining Human Perception; an explosive and timely survey that explores the relationship between design, the body, technology and the senses over the last fifty years.
