Fashion is a verbStories of movement and change
She is "looking for action and heroics in new places". Dr. Kate Fletcher. A long-time pioneer, and in her own words “runner and scout”, within sustainability, fashion and design. On Monday 5 October she gave her first lecture as guest professor at Design School Kolding after years of joint research focus and collaboration in the Local Wisdom project.
We are immensely pleased to now be able to share this online lecture with a larger audience.
The title of the lecture is Fashion is a verb. Stories of movement and change, and in it Fletcher emphasizes, among many other things, the imperative of sustainability in fashion and of systemic change:
- We have to become uncompromisingly systemic… It necessitates a really big shift in thinking, in approach; a shift from product to practices; from materials to systems; that we have to work closer to the source, so to speak, to the foundation of principles of the system, Fletcher says.
In terms of design this means "the conventional design process, which has been developed largely for industry in the context of modernity, obviously needs to be disrupted", Fletcher claims.
