Open inaugural lecture: Design Beyond ‘Us’ and ‘Them’

In his lecture, Design Beyond ‘Us’ and ‘Them’, Per-Olof Hedvall will explore how the ways we categorise people can shape and limit design. Drawing on more than twenty years of research into Universal Design and accessibility, he will introduce perspectives on how design can move beyond distinctions between those who are considered included and those who are not.

At the heart of his work is the concept of nonclusion: an approach to design that does not divide people into ‘us’ and ‘them’, but begins with the recognition that everyone already belongs.

The lecture offers inspiration not only for those working specifically with Universal Design, but for designers and researchers across disciplines.

Per-Olof Hedvall is Professor of Design at Mid Sweden University and has joined Kolding School of Design as Bevica Guest Professor in Universal Design. In this role, he will contribute to the school’s continued development of Universal Design within teaching, research and project development as part of our five-year initiative generously supported by the Bevica Foundation.
